The cause of a large fire Thursday evening that destroyed the majority of the Huachuca United Methodist Church at 506 N. Gila Ave., in Huachuca City is currently under investigation. The fire started that night just a little after 6 p.m. with first responders to the scene arriving just under 10 minutes of reports coming in. Damage to the 10,800-square-foot church was extensive. The fire destroyed the entire second story of the building, as well ruined the lower level. There was no one inside the building at the time of the fire, and no firefighters or other emergency personnel were injured while fighting the flames. Whetstone Fire District chief Peter Bidon said the entire second story of the building was already burned down by the time the first fire unit got to the scene.
