Tehama County is moving forward to adopt new fire safety regulations. The Board of Supervisors have historically matched its regulations to the state’s since 1991. That changed at the start of 2016 when CAL FIRE updated their regulations for the State Responsibility Area (SRA). Tuesday’s proposal by CAL FIRE was to update the Local Responsibility Area (LRA) to match the new state standard. During public comment, four people spoke out but the board ultimately agreed it was in the best interest of public safety to adopt the changes as well. Some of those changes include expanding single lane roadways from 10 feet wide to 12 along with increasing the support of the road to handle 75,000 pounds. Assistant Chief for CAL FIRE Tehama-Glenn Unit Matt Chamblin said it was important that both areas agreed on these regulations. “To have that same level of fire and life safety protection for all individuals within Tehama County not just in the SRA as well as the secondary being to have the same standard county wide," said Chamblin. The proposed changes would only apply to new construction and existing roads would be grandfathered in. At the end of the meeting the board directed staff to draft the new ordinance making the updated changes necessary. Once finished it will then go before the board again for final approval. Chamblin said that process could take as little as 90 days to complete.
