Nine people and several pets have to find a new place to live after a fire ripped through their duplex early Wednesday morning. The scene was on the 4800 block of Del Norte Boulevard. Crews were called to scene just after 4 a.m. A working smoke detector in the front of the unit helped one familyquickly get to safety. The other family noticed a hole in the wall and saw smoke coming from the laundry room. They took out a hose and started splaying water on the fire as crews arrived. Two dogs and a cat were displaced in the fire. One of the dogs had to be rescued by firefighters. Firefighters faced numerous challenges and will have to pull part of the ceiling down to get into the walls and see how far the fire spread. It is still unclear if the home is salvageable and the cause is still under investigation.
