A man was struck by a Costa Mesa fire truck Wednesday in an apparent suicide attempt, police said. The incident was reported at 8:17 a.m. in the 500 block of West 19th Street, said Costa Mesa police Sgt. Bryan Wadkins. A 37-year-old man from Costa Mesa walking west when he apparently stepped off of a curb into the path of the fire truck, said Wadkins. Evidence collected at the scene and interviews with witnesses indicate the mishap was likely a suicide attempt, he said. The man, who wasn’t identified, was struck in the head by a mirror on the passenger side of the fire truck. He suffered a bruised lung, head lacerations and abrasions and was transported by ambulance to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana. The Newport Beach Police Department investigated the incident at the request of Costa Mesa police. Costa Mesa Fire Capt. Chris Coates said firefighters aboard the fire truck were not on call at the time of the incident.
