Sterling Nelson was still processing the chaotic moments Saturday that led to the death of his neighbor, and, if not for a valiant stand, would have left him without a home. “I was terrified,” said Nelson, reflecting Tuesday on the Sand fire’s fatal rampage through his neighborhood in the 26800 block of Iron Canyon Road. “They said to me they didn’t think they could save my house.” As the fire raged Saturday for a second day, the 52-year-old hedge fund manager said he managed to drive to a nearby area that was safe and waited for hours as firefighters went to work. Despite the flames getting close enough to burn the tops of some trees on the property, the firefighters were able to save his home, he said. “I was excited and relieved,” Nelson said. “It was complete joy to know those men risked their lives to save my house. I am forever grateful to them.”
