One man suffered a minor injury and transported himself to the hospital for stitches following a fire that claimed a $5.9 million fitness center under construction across from Mill Creek Cinema in McKinleyville. According to an Arcata Fire District press release, fire crews responded to a fire in the 1500 block of Betty Court on Sunday at 5:45 a.m. “We believe the fire was active for a while before it was noticed by people in the area. For this size building to be fully involved like it was when we arrived on scene is unusual,” AFD Battalion Chief Rick Gomes said in the release. “The building was currently under construction, and the cause of the fire is being investigated.” According to a Times-Standard article published a year ago, the planned multi-million dollar gym, dubbed The Club at Mill Creek, was estimated to be complete within the next two months.
