A hiking safety tool may have helped saved an Irvine woman’s life earlier this week when she slipped down Devil’s Backbone trail.
Jennifer Fujita, 34, clung from a steep rock ridge using her ice ax until she was hoisted out of the mountain Monday afternoon by San Bernardino County Sheriff’s and San Bernardino County Fire personnel, according to a news release from the sheriff’s department.
Fujita was with her brother hiking down the Devil’s Backbone Trail near the Mt. Baldy Summit at the 9,200-foot level when she slid about 50 feet off the trail. The hiker was able to use her ice ax to stop herself from falling further down the ridge.
