CAL FIRE's fire prevention program will now be funded by a new source after Governor Jerry Brown signed AB398 on Tuesday, July 25.
AB398 extends and improves the state's Cap and Trade program to ensure California continues to meets its ambitious climate change goals by reducing statewide greenhouse gas emissions.

This legislation extends the program by ten years until 2030. The law will also suspend until 2031 the $150 fire prevention fee paid by the public, which was used to fund CAL FIRE's fire prevention program.
A portion of the funds from the Cap and Trade program will now cover the cost to continue CAL FIRE's firefighting efforts.
CAL FIRE Assistant Deputy Director Daniel Berlant said even though the funding source will change, CAL FIRE programs will stay the same.
