Scattered around a small office in the corner of the Apple Valley Fire Protection District Station lay seven firefighter helmets, each of which serve as a reminder of having played an important role in the lives of others.
“I’ve served in every single rank you could possibly think of when it comes to being a firefighter,” said Fire Chief Sid Hultquist. “Of course when I first started out I really wanted to be a smokejumper and when I was finally qualified to do so there was a hiring freeze at the time.”
Known to many in the area as a hero and the friendliest firefighter with the biggest smile, Hultquist announced he will be stepping down from his duties and take his leave on Aug. 21. Though hard as it is to leave a career he loves, Hultquist said he felt it was time to retire so that he may enjoy spending more time with his family.
