Fire Capt. Scott Jennie made sure Firefighter James Lin knew how to prepare for a fast-attack house fire. He stood next to Lin, an acting engineer, at the fire engine during a recent training day at Aliso Beach Park. He fired off questions: “What’s your pressure?” How did you come up with the pressure on both hose lines?” Calculating hose pressure is important when fighting fires in Laguna Beach, where many homes are built in ascending levels into cliffs, he told the 33-year-old. An engineer needs to know those calculations backwards and forwards, said Jennie, the department’s senior captain, with 26 years in Laguna.
