Interim Police Chief Turu VanderWiel will soon be washing Sonora City Fire Chief Aimee New’s SUV as a lighthearted punishment following the conclusion of the battle of the badges blood drive hosted at the American Red Cross Sonora Blood Donation Center. The Fire Department had 50 pledged donors compared to the Police Department’s 40 over the course of the the week-long competition, which began on Sept. 26. A total of 90 pints of blood were collected over the four operation days of the blood drive, which can assist in saving up to 270 lives, a Sonora Police Department news release said. The blood drive was prompted by a national shortage in blood donations following multiple natural disasters throughout the United States in September.
