Fire crews have made gains against a wind-driven wildfire in rural central California that is threatening several buildings, including a 1880s railroad station. Cal Fire spokeswoman Cathey Mattingly says the blaze burning through chaparral bush and shrub oak has scorched 3.5 square miles (9 square kilometers) north of Bishop in Inyo County. It was 35% contained Tuesday morning. Mattingly says the fire broke out shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday near the Pleasant Valley Reservoir and Highway 395 and quickly grew to 900 acres. It had tripled in size by Monday morning and prompted the mandatory evacuations. Officials ended most evacuations that were ordered near the town but warned that strong winds were expected in the area and urged residents to remain vigilant. The fire remains under investigation.
