Cal Fire Butte County is training 29 seasonal firefighters this week. This is the last group of firefighters Cal Fire will hire this year.
Each year, Cal Fire Butte County hires back about 100 seasonal firefighters. Some of the firefighters were laid off for three to five months.
The training is part of a week-long process. On Monday, firefighters were in the classroom taking written tests.
On Tuesday, firefighters practiced several skills such as hose lays, ladders and fire shelters.
Fire Captain in Training, Jeff Edson, explained how the seasonal hires are spread out throughout the county.
"We try to stagger them so the first hire back was two months ago and we get them on and then all these guys come back in and be our peak staffing levels and we'll go to two engines, and then a handful of our stations throughout the county. The rest of them that aren't going to stations will be out at the airbase, helping fill in the aircraft out there," said Edson.
