It is a tie between Wonder Woman and Spider-Man, Gina Bell explained, standing in uniform before a group of middle school students. The longtime Woodland Police Officer was asked to pick her favorite hero during a Youth Public Safety Academy meeting earlier in the week — but she couldn’t decide. In an effort to expose Woodland students to careers in public safety, the city’s fire and police departments have joined forces to build a program to do just that. Spearheaded by Sam and Trista Kennedy — a husband-and-wife team who represent both agencies — the academy is running through its very first session. And according to the pair, everything is going well. Trista, who works in the Police Department, noted the students have been curious about the career pathways and have been working better as a group. The program splits their time between the police and fire departments, but will also show them other opportunities in public safety.
