Firefighters on Thursday continued to battle seven wildfires that erupted a day prior in Contra Costa County, combatting strong headwinds as they tried to contain the blaze.
The fires began around 1 p.m. Wednesday and are burning in the area between Camino Diablo and the Alameda County line, officials said. The fires crossed the county line burn about 500 acres by Wednesday night, and firefighters had reached 35 percent containment. “It’s a wind-driven fire and we’re still dealing with 40 to 50 mile per hour winds,” said Scott McLean, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Firefighting conditions were slightly better on Thursday morning as temperatures had cooled, McLean said. No information was made available about possible structural damage, but firefighters were optimistic on containing the blaze.
