A fire at an East Oakland home Thursday night apparently caused by overloaded extension cords connected together is a reminder of what can happen when such circumstances exist, officials said Friday.
Luckily the fire was contained to a front bedroom where it started and no one was injured, officials said.
The fire was reported about 7:14 p.m. Thursday at the home in the 1500 block of 90th Avenue.
The three residents inside at the time were alerted to the fire by a smoke detector and were able to get out on their own before firefighters arrived, officials said.
Seventeen firefighters had the single-alarm fire under control at 7:27 p.m., fire Capt. Tracy Paganelli said. Damage was confined to the contents of the bedroom, she said.
She said it is believed the fire started as a result of several extension cords used to power a lamp, heater and other items in the bedroom being connected together to a single outlet which residents of any residence should be careful about, especially as the holidays approach.
