A man hanging out of the second-story window of his burning apartment in Talmadge had to be rescued by firefighters Thursday. San Diego Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Dave Seneviratne told NBC 7 the fire started in an upstairs unit at a veteran housing complex on the 4200 block of Estrella Avenue just before 5 p.m. Fire crews arrived to find a man hanging out of a second-story window trying to escape the fire. Firefighters put up a latter and were able to get him to safety, Seneviratne said. A Good Samaritan who sprayed the flames with a fire extinguisher also suffered smoke inhalation injuries and another person was cut. The victim suffered smoke inhalation injuries.
