Stockton firefighters rescued two people from an early morning fire at an abandoned building in downtown. About 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, Stockton police officers saw smoke coming from a vacant three-story building in the 600 block of North Center Street, police reported. The officers also could see flames inside. The Stockton Fire department responded and rescued a woman who was inside the burning building, said Stockton fire Battalion Chief Matt Knierim. The woman told firefighters there were seven other people inside. Firefighters found a second person, who then reported there were 10 more individuals in the building. Knierim said Stockton fire personnel searched the building, but there were no other occupants inside. According to Stockton police, the two people rescued were evaluated and cleared by medics. One firefighter suffered a minor shoulder injury, Knierim said.
