Firefighters continue to battle a grass fire burning near one of Fort Carson’s training areas.
Previously estimated at 150 acres Tuesday, the Mountain Post said Wednesday the blaze had exploded to 1,450 acres as of Wednesday morning. As of Thursday afternoon, the fire was holding steady at the 1,450 acres, and firefighters brought containment to 80 percent containment.
According to Fort Carson officials, the training area is about 10 miles south of the main post. Crews on scene since the blaze began Monday included units from Fort Carson, Hanover, Security, Shriever Air Force Base, Colorado Springs Utilities and Fort Carson’s Directorate of Public Works. Most of those outside agencies were released Wednesday evening as the fire lines were holding well, Fort Carson said.
The fire started Monday afternoon.
