A chemical spill at a local business took crews hours to clean up Wednesday and into Thursday. Firefighters said the spill was reported sometime Wednesday morning at Light Metals Coloring on Spring Street. The chemical that spilled was hexavalent chromium -- which firefighters said could be dangerous. In addition to fire crews, the state's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency responded. Around 11:15 p.m., firefighters said they were still cleaning up the scene after the chemical spilled out into the roadway and into some storm drains. They said they expected to be there into the early morning hours Thursday. No injuries were reported. How the chemical was spilled is still not clear, firefighters said.
