Firefighters responded to New Haven’s port area Thursday morning after a reported fuel spill there.
Engine 5 and Squad 1 responded to Waterfront Street at about 7:50 a.m. on a report that biodiesel fuel had leaked from a rail car in the area, Fire Battalion Chief James Watkins said at the scene.
No one was hurt in the incident and Magellan, the company that reported the leak, had contractors at the scene working to clean up the leak.
“If they weren’t here in the process of cleaning when we got here, our companies would’ve gotten involved,” Watkins said. Firefighters confirmed the contractors were following all of the proper protocols and also notified the U.S. Coast Guard and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection of the spill.
