The Norwalk Board of Fire Commissioners on Tuesday afternoon approved pay raises for the city’s fire chief and assistant fire chief. The increases match those given to rank-and-file members of the Norwalk Firefighters Local 830 in their latest four-year collective-bargaining agreement with the city, said Norwalk Director of Personnel and Labor Relations Ray Burney. Fire Chief Gino Gatto will receive a 1.1 percent raise retroactive to Jan. 1 and a 1.25 percent raise retroactive to July 1, 2018. Chris King, who was promoted to assistant fire chief in March, will get a 1.25 percent raise retroactive to July 1, 2018, pending successful completion of his probationary period, which runs through September. “The only way you would deny an appropriate raise is if the performance were poor, and we certainly haven’t found that in any case,” Mayor Harry Rilling, chairman of the fire commission, said afterward.
