Police made a second arrest in connection with a February fire that occurred during a past fire captains’ dinner — Gregory Bomba, a former Shelton fire captain. Bomba, 45, of Newtown surrendered himself Monday morning to police in connection with a February fire that occurred during the dinner at Echo Hose Company #1, according to a statement from police and Det. Christopher Nugent. An investigation into the fire on Feb. 3 revealed that it was purposefully started in the rear of a pickup truck parked at the back of the firehouse during the dinner. Bomba was charged with second degree arson, second degree endangerment, second degree criminal mischief and conspiracy, police said. He was arraigned in Derby Superior Court and held on a $250,000 bond. Volunteer firefighter William Tortora, brother of Fire Marshal James “Chic” Tortora, was arrested last week in connection with the fire. Tortora told police he was drunk when he allegedly set the box full of cardboard boxes on fire at the station and drove down Route 8, damaging a door and car, according to an affidavit filed in Derby Superior Court.
