A hazmat situation led to 1,000 people being evacuated and several road closures in New Haven on Tuesday morning. Emergency crews responded to 300 George Street after reports of a strong odor of gas coming from the building. The odor was a result of a chemical leak, which was identified as phosphorus pentasulfide, according to fire chief John Alston Jr. The spillage was caused by a lab worker. There is no word yet on injuries. 1,000 people were evacuated from the building. There were also three transit buses on scene to provide shelter and keep people warm. George Street, Church Street, and York Street were closed, as well as highway ramps in the area. While the building at 300 George Street remains closed, the surrounding streets have reopened to vehicular and foot traffic.
