A fire in March destroyed the upstairs living area of the firehouse, displacing the firefighters for months. New Haven Fire Department Assistant Chief Orlando Marcano said he hopes the firefighters will be home again as the electrical repairs are finished, but couldn’t give a hard number of when they could move back in because it would depend on what workers find in making the repairs. “The priority now is to move the guys in the next two weeks so they have sleeping quarters,” Marcano said. Since June, Engine 8 has been operating from a trailer parked next to the fire station, purchased with support from the Fire Union, but Squad 1 is still responding from the Central Station on Grand Avenue. “The firehouse in general is a second home to us and just being there and seeing what happened to our station, everyone has taken it differently,” Lt. Michael DeMennato said. “We go to emergencies every single day and we see tragedy every day.
