Thanksgiving is coming a day early for Valley seniors in need. That’s thanks to the Derby Fire Department. which will continue its annual tradition of cooking and delivering meals to those who may be alone for the holiday and are in need of a helping hand. Volunteer firefighters Wednesday morning will begin cooking some 50 pounds of potatoes, five turkeys and 30 pounds of vegetables, along with stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, rolls and cupcakes, according to former Fire Commissioner Mike Kelleher. “We believe that Derby residents and others who will be spending time alone this holiday season, as in other seasons, need a friend who will remember them on the holidays,” said Kelleher. “Often, we respond to calls and people are left without their belongings or in some cases, either permanently or temporarily without shelter. We just want to let the residents know that we are always thinking of them, whether it's coming to their aid in a tragedy or bringing them a great, hot meal during the holidays. They are always in our thoughts and prayers.”
