The City Council voted unanimously Monday to transfer more than $27,000 in unspent capital improvements funds to the Occum Volunteer Fire Department.
A resolution was presented at Monday’s meeting of the council that seeks to reallocate $27,659.20 from prior years’ capital budgets to purchase vehicle stabilization equipment and additional sets of turnout gear for the department’s interior firefighters. The resolution had been introduced at the city council meeting on Oct. 1, but was referred to the public safety committee.
“As a member of the public safety, we sent forth a favorable recommendation,” Alderman Joseph DeLucia said.
The resolution addresses the fact that the fire department in Occum lacks the equipment to stabilize vehicles involved in automobile accidents. A large stretch of I-395 runs through Occum, and the department responds to several car accident calls each year.
