Crews in Stratford are still investigating after a fire destroyed the Shakespeare American Festival Theater early Sunday morning.
The Stratford Fire Department received several calls about the fire just before 1 a.m. Sunday morning.
Firefighters were on scene minutes after the first call came in, but by then, the old theater was engulfed in flames, with most of them coming from the stage area.
The theater did have a sprinkler system, but whether or not it was working, that’s something officials said they’re looking into.
On Monday, contractors were picking through the rubble, while onlookers stopped by to catch a glimpse of what's left of the old historic Shakespeare American Festival Theater.
“It meant a lot to the town, it really did and there were so many people, school children that would come from all over, all over the country to see performances," said Mary Ellen Kother, of Stratford.
