VIDEO: Dispatchers across the state are being honored this week for the work they do when only seconds count.
Monday marked the beginning of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, which is a time to honor dispatchers who answer the call for help.
“The majority of the calls that come in the people are having their worst day,” said New Haven Public Safety Communications Director, Joseph Vitale.
Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, dispatchers are ready to answer 911 emergency calls
”They’re not only making sure that the right information gets to the right person at the right time, but they’re also playing the role of therapist,” said New Haven Mayor, Justin Elicker.
In 2023, 165,000 calls came into this center alone, making it one of the busiest in the state.
