An elderly woman was confirmed as the second flu-related death of the 2016-2017 influenza season in Delaware.
The Delaware Division of Public Health announced the 98-year-old New Castle County resident passed away during the week of January 9th, advising that she had also suffered from underlying health conditions. She had been diagnosed with influenza A.
The agency also disclosed that, to date, there had been 285 lab-confirmed cases of the flu statewide, with 77 requiring hospitalization.
Flu activity typically increases during the months of January and February, according to DPH, and the agency noted that the past two weeks had seen a significant uptick in the number of cases.
