The Christiana Fire Company is embarking on a $6 million construction project that will take them into their second century of service.
Work started just before Thanksgiving on a temporary garage across the street from their main station in the Village of Christiana.
Once the temporary housing is ready, the main station, portions of which date back to the 1920s, will be demolished to make way for a modern facility. Building Committee member Hank Smith says expansions in the 1960s and '70s have now been outgrown.
"Fast forward to today, we're doing in excess of 15,000 fire and EMS runs, we have exceeded the building that we are in."
