Fire damaged a home in the Windy Hills neighborhood Wednesday evening, displacing a family of five.
The fire broke out at 5:16 p.m. in the unit block of Newbrook Road, according to an Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company spokesperson. Firefighters from Aetna, Christiana, Mill Creek, Cranston Heights and Hockessin fire companies arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the first floor of the two-story home.
One occupant was evaluated for smoke inhalation but declined to go to the hospital for treatment. Firefighters also rescued two cats from the home.
The state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze. The home did not have a working smoke detector, Aetna officials said.
The American Red Cross is providing temporary housing to the two adults and three children who live in the damaged house.
