A gas leak at Hotel Dewey Tuesday evening prompted police to evacuate the building as firefighters dispersed the gas, according to a release from Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company. At about 5:40 p.m., Rehoboth firefighters responded to a gas leak initially at the Dewey Beach Police Department on Rodney Street, where there was a strong odor of gas, according to the release. The source was not found at the police department, and Rehoboth firefighters eventually located the gas leak at Hotel Dewey on Coastal Highway, according to the release. An old propane tank with a hole in it was the source, said Warren Jones, the public information officer for Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company. Firefighters and Dewey Beach police evacuated the hotel and firefighters set up a water line to disperse the gas. It took an hour for firefighters to empty the propane tank, according to the release.
