A two alarm fire tore through a building at the Woodacre Apartments in Claymont Friday morning, heavily damaging several units and displacing residents.
The Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office said the cause of the November 2, 2018, fire was accidental and has been blamed on unattended cooking. The blaze was reported just before 10 a.m. but had already engulfed a third floor apartment and started burning through the roof when firefighters arrived.
Darryl Williams, who lives in a neighboring building, said he, another resident and the maintenance man ran inside to alert residents.
"I was coming out of my apartment going to my car and I saw the flames coming out the third floor window. I saw the maintenance man and we started running down here, and we got to the building and the maintenance man we said 'look we've gotta people out of the building.' "Another gentleman from this building, we all ran across and ran inside."
