Obscured by smoke, only the sign that reads "Willey Farms" remains after an overnight fire at the family-owned Townsend market.
The iconic country market went up in flames on Route 13 in Townsend shortly after 2 a.m. Monday, November 5, 2018.
The fire quickly expanded to three alarms as firefighters from neighboring towns joined the firefight. The area along Route 13 is a "non-hydrant area," according to Townsend firefighters, who quickly ran out of water during their attack.
A dozen tanker trucks--carrying thousands of gallons of water--came to the scene from surrounding states, but while water was being hooked up, the fire advanced leading to a structural collapse.
Smoke continued to rise from the rubble around daybreak with fire smoldering inside.
