Port Orange Fire Chief William “Skip” Irby has tendered his resignation a little more than eight months after taking the job. Then-Interim City Manager David Harden selected Irby to fill the permanent role of fire chief. Irby had been filling in since August 2014 before that. Irby was Ormond Beach’s fire chief from 2009 to 2011. Irby "formally resigns his position as Fire Chief for the City of Port Orange. In his letter to City Manager Jake Johansson, Chief Irby stated he wanted to thank him and the city for the opportunity to serve as Fire Chief," according to a statement from the city Tuesday morning. "He also indicated he is willing stay on board until his successor has been selected." Johansson took over as city manager during the summer. Irby replaced Joe Pozzo, who resigned in June along with several other key department leaders after controversy surrounding unauthorized water meter purchases. Pozzo maintained that the departure was not related to the purchases. The city's police Chief Gerald Monahan will also retire this year.
