It's a way to make sure everyone gets help as fast as possible during fire emergencies. Firefighters in the city of Pensacola and Escambia County want to guarantee the closest fire station will respond to a 9-1-1 call. Right now, if you live in the county and your house catches fire, your 9-11 call will go to a county fire department even though a city fire department may be closer. County fire can ask the city for help under a "mutual aid agreement" but under the proposed arrangement, classified as "automatic aid," both agencies will get the 9-11 call to show up to your house. The conversation started after a fire killed four children in February. The fire was in the county and members of the public contacted elected officials wondering if crews from a city fire station would have gotten there faster because it was closer. Elected officials brought that conversation to their fire fighters who evaluated the coverage areas within the city, county lines and realized certain pockets of the city could benefit from the automatic aid agreement.
