Commissioner George Mirabella beat political newcomer Nick Rodriquez to win a third term in Seat 4 on the Key Largo Fire Rescue & Emergency Medical Services District board, while Frank Conklin upset incumbent Commissioner Kay Cullen for Seat 2.
Both Mirabella and Conklin had previously volunteered with the fire department and will be sworn in at the Nov. 19 district meeting. The district board oversees contracts with nonprofit fire and EMS service providers.
Mirabella, who won with 62 percent of the vote, said he’s thankful to his family for their support and helping him campaign.
“I was shocked when my wife told me the results. I was blown away,” he said of his victory. “This just proves that the public is disappointed in how the board has handled things over the last few years.”
