Sunday's confirmed tornado in Southwest Georgia was brief but whipped up potentially deadly 95 mile-per-hour winds. According to Albany's Assistant Fire Chief Eugene Anderson, 100 mile-per-hour winds can hurl a two-by-four through four double-sided pieces of Sheetrock, and then keep traveling. After last year's devastating storms, the Department of Housing and Urban Development has allocated a $64.9 million Community Development Block Grant for South and Middle Georgia. Dougherty County leaders believe the federal grant money will be allocated toward paying for the construction of storm shelters.
