Firefighters in Statesboro rescued two people from a burning apartment building early Monday morning.
Crews had to get both people off of the second floor, in one case using a ladder to get them out of the fire and smoke and down to the ground.
It happened around 4 a.m. at an apartment on Georgia Avenue. Fire crews already knew there were one or two people trapped inside. They found a man hanging out of a second-floor window to get out of the smoke. They used a ladder to help him get to the ground. Others went into the building and located a woman and helped her get outside.
Statesboro's fire chief says crews train for moments exactly like this one.
"I'm extremely proud of our folks and the ones from other agencies that responded as well," said Chief Tim Grams, Statesboro Fire Department.
The chief says the fire started in one of the kitchens. He says it remains under routine investigation, but they don't see anything suspicious at this point.
