The deadline to get your applications in for the Savannah Fire Fee discount is officially over. The city is working to finalize the fire fee proposal by next week, but citizens and elected officials alike are saying we should call this fire fee what it is. "I mean, we are taxing our citizens out of this community." "It's an undue tax on the church. It is a tax. They can call it fee, but it's a tax." Mayor Eddie DeLoach proposed to cut the fee in half over a week ago. Even Alderman Van Johnson says the decrease will not change how the fee affects Savannah renters. "The discounts apply to the homeowner and not to the tenant. For us, that is a significant issue. The majority of individuals that live in our community - those who are on fixed incomes, those who are poor, those who are students - they don't own homes. They rent," Alderman Johnson said.
