An elderly couple is dead after their home catches fire on Cottonwood Drive in Appling, according to fire crews on scene. Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Glenn Allen tells News 12 says the cause of the fire will not be able to be determined until Saturday morning due to the darkness of the scene. The fire started just before 7p.m. The call coming into dispatch as a structure fire with entrapment. Neighbors tell our crews on scene that the home belonged to an elderly couple in their 70s who normally kept to themselves. The Columbia County coroner is working to notify the next of kin. Until then, the names of the victims will not be released.
