The Salvation Army on Montgomery Street was evacuated early Friday morning after someone set a mattress on fire. Maj. Paul Egan says the fire was set at the store but the emergency shelter and other residential services were evacuated because they are connected to the store. Egan said quick work by police and fire limited damage to broken glass and water inside the store. Savannah Police told WJCL 22 News that officers responded around 2:30 for reports of a structure fire. Upon arrival officers noticed a glass door that appeared to be broken with flames coming from the inside.
