A Volcano man who sustained injuries trying to fight a Sept. 9 fire at his Nahelenani Street home has died of his injuries, police said Tuesday. The man is identified as 64-year-old Kris Anderson, who died in Thursday in Honolulu. Sixteen units responded to a 6:15 p.m. alarm, with the first unit arriving on scene 11 minutes later, according to a written Fire Department statement. Arriving firefighters found Anderson trying to put out the fire. He was taken by ambulance to Hilo in serious condition with burns he suffered in his effort to extinguish the blaze. He was later flown to Honolulu for treatment. Two minors, a boy and a girl, who suffered no apparent injuries, were also taken to HMC as a precautionary measure. No one else was in the home. The fire was reported under control at 6:40 p.m. and extinguished at 8:45 p.m., fire officials said. Damages were estimated at $80,000 and the home was deemed a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
