An Idaho family of four attempted to escape their flooded campground on the Kalalau Trail on Kauai.
"All the weather forecasts I had checked, quite frequently, said there would be scattered showers along the way and that sounded about right for Kauai weather. So we said great, let's go," said rescued camper Stephanie Glasgow.
Saturday was their expected day of departure, with an 11 mile hike out to the resort they had reservations at.
"We got word that the trail was completely washed out and it flows from the front end. So even if we were able to cross that river, there was no way we were going anywhere," said Glasgow.
The family credits a group of experienced local hikers with telling them to turn around and head back to the campground.
Back at the site, Glasgow said campers came together, sharing tarps, food and other resources.
The fire department airlifted them and about 25 other hikers to safety, according to family.
