Big Island firefighters and multiple agencies are still battling a brush fire burning hundreds of acres in Waikoloa.
The fire, which broke out Saturday, has already burned about 900 acres, officials said. At last check, the fire was 35 percent contained.
Dozens of firefighters and DLNR officials are responding. More crews will be dispatched Monday morning.
Highway 190 from Makalei to the Daniel K. Inouye Highway was shut down for over a day. It was reopened around 10 p.m. Sunday.
Just before 6 p.m., a Big Island fire spokesperson said flames got within 1,000 yards away from the highway.
The fire was first reported around 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
"Far away it just looked like it was billowing up, the white smoke. But then as we got closer, we could see the dark smoke and we could smell quite a bit in the air," Waimea resident Kristi Weiser said.
