A 74-year-old Japanese visitor was found unconscious in waters off Kaanapali Beach on Maui, where so far this year 11 people have died in ocean-related activities. Fire officials got the call at 1:16 p.m. Tuesday that a man, who had been swimming in an area fronting the Sheraton Maui Resort, was found floating face down by bystanders about 100 feet from the beach. They pulled him to shore and began CPR. When firefighters arrived at 1:22 p.m., police officers were performing CPR on the man. Fire crews continued the CPR until paramedics arrived. The man’s pulse returned and paramedics transported him to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
