Two Kauai homes were heavily damaged over the weekend after two separate fires caused a total of $1 million in damage.
Kauai officials say the first fire broke out at a home on Nunu Road in Kapaa just before 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Firefighters arrived to see the sing-story home fully engulfed in flames. Fire crews from the Kapaa and Lihue stations responded.
The fire was under control within minutes, but not before causing an estimated $300,000 in damage, deeming the house to be a total loss.
No one was home at the time and the cause is under investigation.
Then, on Sunday morning, a fire ignited at a Kilauea home around 9:30 a.m.
Kauai officials say an unattended flame from a portable burner near the patio ignited the blaze.
Flames were under control in about 30 minutes. All residents were able to escape. Damage was estimated at $700,000.
