A man is recovering in the hospital while another sleeps outside overnight after two hikers got lost in Haiku Valley on Monday. The two men began the hike around 8 a.m. Monday in the Moanalua area before getting lost near Kaneohe. The two were hiking in an unsanctioned area when one of them fell and slid almost 50 feet, injuring himself in the process. Honolulu fire crews found the hikers at 7:06 p.m. using a helicopter. Crews were able to transport the injured hiker to the landing zone at Kaneohe District Park, but were unable to retrieve the second hiker due to heavy cloud cover. The second hiker was instructed to take shelter in the area for the evening until crews could retrieve him when conditions improve. The injured hiker that was successfully transported was taken to the hospital at 7:33 p.m.
