Would having automatic fire sprinklers have prevented the deadly Marco Polo fire that killed four people last July? "Having a fire sprinkler at home is like having one of us in your home 24/7, if you think about it that way. Sprinklers are very effective and safe and it help occupants to get out of their house safely," Honolulu Fire Department Captain Kevin Mokulehua, said. That's why some condo owners attended a free program to learn how to make those safety improvements at the CONDORAMA event. "We want to promote this life safety evaluation for all buildings to do it because it's an important tool to determine if your building has the minimum life safety requirements," Mokulehua said. City ordinance 18-14 that passed in May aims to promote fire safety improvements for high rise residential buildings, including making older buildings retrofit with automatic fire sprinklers. Marco Polo's association voted to install sprinklers.
